Welcome Indiana coaches!
The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) are pleased to provide you with the courses you need to become certified to coach in Indiana.
Rule 7 of the IHSAA by-laws provides specific rules concerning the requirements member schools need to meet regarding the employment and education of coaches. Rules 7-1.4 and 7-1.5 speak directly to the requirements necessary for non-teacher coaches. While not a requirement to coach in Indiana, the ASEP course Sport First Aid (online or classroom) is recommended by the IHSAA for all coaches.
ASEP offers non-teaching coaches two options for meeting IHSAA Rule 7:
Coaching Principles
Drawing from the text Successful Coaching, Coaching Principles challenges coaches to define who they are as coaches (their coaching philosophy, objectives, and style); enhance communication and motivational skills; become more effective teachers and trainers; and improve team, relationship, risk, and self-management skills. Coaching Principles is a study of the fundamentals of being a successful coach - before even stepping on the playing field.
IHSAA coaches can purchase Coaching Principles online as a stand-alone course by clicking on the corresponding online course icon in the table at the bottom of the page.
