Welcome Lyndon State College students!

The American Sport Education Program (ASEP) is pleased to offer our sport-specific coaching courses through LSC. The courses are delivered in a blended format, requiring students to complete the online courses in conjunction with classroom instruction and assignments.

Students achieve ASEP Bronze Level certification when they complete Coaching Principles, Sport First Aid, a Coaching [Sport] Technical and Tactical Skills course, and obtain comparable CPR certification.

Undergraduate majors with aspirations for coaching are encouraged to consider enrolling in the athletic coaching education minor described below:

Minor in Athletic Coaching Education:

PED 3010 (2 credits): Coaching Baseball Technical and Tactical Skills online course (Fall)
Course Description: Coaching Methods Baseball teaches the theory, techniques and practices of coaching and emphasizes advanced skills, drills, and real and problem-solving games situations. The instruction also investigates the psychological, social and physiological influences on the athlete.

AHS 2111 (4 credits): Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (Sport First Aid)(Spring)
Instructor: Chris Ummer, MS, ATC
Course Description: This course introduces the sport medicine and pedagogy students to the methods and theories of proper treatment of injuries. The practicum involves the application of preventive, supportive, and special padding techniques which are used in injury management.

AHS 4710 (3 credits): Coaching Principles
Instructor: Geoffrey Davison, MS
Course Description: The course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of coaching. Topics studied include “developing a coaching philosophy,” sport pedagogy, “communicating with your athletes,” the management functions and roles of a coach, and elements of sport physiology related to athlete/team conditioning and preparation. Students will learn via online materials, classroom presentations, assigned readings and research, and considerations of the practical application of coaching principles to real-life situations.

This course will help you learn how to teach the skills and strategies and techniques and tactics of baseball. You’ll learn about approaches to coaching, including the games approach (an alternative to drills-based coaching), you’ll develop a season plan and a series of practice plans; and you’ll improve your ability to coach during games. This course is suitable for high school coaches and for serious club coaches, and college coaches.
