New Opportunity for K-12 Faculty-Coaches to Earn Professional Development Credits

As a K-12 faculty-coach, you now have the opportunity to take American Sport Education Program (ASEP) courses-geared toward coaching-and earn credit toward renewing your teaching certificate in the process. And the best part is you can take the courses online, at your own pace, and in the comfort of your own home. You owe it to yourself to take advantage of this exciting opportunity!

Until now, faculty-coaches have had little incentive to participate in a coaching education program. In many states, K-12 faculty are not required to have any additional training to become a sport coach; simply having a valid teaching license qualifies them.

However, if you're like the majority of faculty-coaches, you do need to earn continuing education credits to maintain your teaching certification (and to move up the salary scale). This is typically accomplished by attending classes at a local college or university; participating in conferences, seminars, or workshops; or taking online courses. It's likely the courses you usually take fall within the subject area that you teach.

Through the ASEP University Network, you can take ASEP Bronze Level online courses-coaching courses-through participating colleges and universities and earn graduate, undergraduate, or continuing education credits to use toward recertification. And the instruction you gain will only help to improve your performance as a coach and enhance the sport experience for the athletes you coach.

Courses available through the ASEP University Network include the following ASEP Bronze Level courses:

Coaching Principles
Sport First Aid

ASEP is working diligently to expand its network of colleges and universities offering ASEP Bronze level courses for continuing education credit. The following institutions have committed to the program so far:

James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA
Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, IL
University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Platteville, WI
Fresno Pacific University, Fresno, CA

Each institution has its own policies, procedures, timelines, and fee structures surrounding enrollment. Detailed information can be found at the above links. In a nutshell, the process involves these steps:

1. Enroll in the ASEP University Network school of your choice and pay associated fees to the school;
2. Purchase course materials (which include textbook and CD-ROMs) from ASEP Web site;
3. Using the materials, take the course through ASEP Web site;
4. When course is completed, credits are granted by the school.

If you have to earn continuing education credit to maintain your teaching certificate, take a course that will improve your performance in your "other classroom." Enroll in ASEP Bronze Level courses through the ASEP University Network!
