One way to practice keeping the ball in play is to use The Deep Game, described on page 151 of Coaching Youth Tennis. This game has two players at the baseline. The object of the game is for the players to hit consistent ground strokes deep in the court. Players earn one point for keeping the ball in the court and two points for each ball that lands beyond the service line. The winner is the first player to reach 21 points.

To give you a better idea of how the worksheets in this unit can help you in practice, we asked Coach Simmons to fill one out while running The Deep Game. Reading the observations Coach Simmons made during this practice will remind you what you need to be looking for as your players participate in this and other games.
