How would you handle this situation?

Ask for volunteers to run with Garrett on terrain that is suitable for a wheelchair.

Assign one or two athletes to run with Garrett on the road.

Inform Garrett of the plans for the season and ask he if he needs any training adjustments to accommodate the wheelchair.

Let Garrett figure out on his own how to participate.

Deny Garrett a place on the team because of safety concerns.

Garret finds this approach demeaning because he doesn't want anybody going out of his way to include him.

This response irritates the athletes assigned to run on the road. They don't think they should be punished just so that someone without legs can be on the team.

Garrett appreciates the fact that you asked. He thinks he'll be able to handle most of the "runs" but thinks it might be wise for him to repeat one of the more moderate ones instead of tackling the rocky hill that isn't suitable for wheelchair access.

This response is insensitive and doesn't account for Garrett's unique needs. He's glad for the opportunity to participate but unsure of your expectations for the "run" on the rocky terrain.

This response angers Garrett, who needs a physical challenge in his life for emotional development. His parents bring a lawsuit against the school.
