Coaches and captains at a pregame conference

Text

The coaches and captains' conference is an opportunity for umpires to demonstrate their professional approach to managing the game. The plate umpire, who's in charge of this meeting, starts with a review of the ground rules focusing on the dead-ball areas of the field. Other topics to be reviewed at this meeting include the overthrow and ball rotation rules, lineup cards and the time allowed between doubleheader games.

This conference is very important because it sets the tone for the game. The plate umpire explains what the appropriate interaction between coaches and umpires should be. The NFHS Sporting Behavior Policy should also be discussed to emphasize the need for civility and respect for both officials and coaches throughout the game. For a short checklist of all the topics covered in this conference refer to the Checklist for Coaches/Captains' Pregame Conference.

Good afternoon. I'm Erika Strong and I'll be your plate umpire today.

Hi, I'm Alex Miller. I'll be on the bases.

(Very slight pause, then other participants speak.)

I'm Joey Johnson, coach of Central.

Connie Ohlson, captain.

Sue Verdon, St. Joseph's coach.

I'm Leslie Owens, captain.

(Erika) Lineup cards? (Pause.) Thank you.

(Erika) OK, the usual ground rules will apply today. We've got a few snags in the fence at left field, so please make sure that your players see that. We'll be watching for stuck balls. We've got three balls to work with today and we'll be rotating them in at the half innings. After first pitch, your pitchers can ask for a ball switch if they want one. They can also ask for a pitch count whenever they want one. Central's doing the official scoring book. We're going to be doing our best on the calls today, but if you have a problem with a call, we don't mind if you want to bring it up, talk about it. We're not perfect, and we’ll listen, but please keep it professional and quick so we can keep the game going.
