The starter’s responsibilities begin well before meet day, and they don’t end with the last event. The starter must
- inspect and test all starting and timing devices;
- become familiar with the start and finish lines, relay staggers and so on;
- meet with other officials to confirm times, start and finish procedures, prerace instructions and recall procedures;
- control the environment around the starting area, including checking for uniform or jewelry violations;
- give final instructions; and
- start all races from the appropriate position based on the event and the number of recall starters.
