Shirt:
White collared shirts are common in many states, short- or long-sleeved, with a state association patch on the left sleeve
Starter's sleeve:
Should be a solid color – red, yellow, or orange – for best visibility by the finish line officials. It should be worn on the arm that operates the starting device, or on both arms.
Dark or neutral pants:
No jeans or exercise pants
Starting device:
In this case, a starter's pistol, which must be .32 caliber for outdoor events, or .22 caliber for indoor events. The starter should always have an extra starting device ready in case of malfunction.
Black powder or pyro shells:
If a starter's pistol is used, the starter should keep a good supply of shells. The starter should collect all spent shells and dispose of them properly.
