The clerk of the course gives the runners race instructions, but the starter gives final instructions just before the runners take their marks. These instructions tell the runners what commands to expect and how to respond to them.

Click on the Audio button to hear an example of a starter giving final instructions just before the start of a 100-meter race.

Okay, runners! These are your commands to begin the race.

When I give you the "on your marks" command, I expect you to get in your blocks, take your positions, get yourselves set within a reasonable time.

After the "set" command, you will remain motionless. You'll start with the fire of the gun, and if there is a false start, we'll ask you to come back in your lane. We'll identify the individual who will step off the track as they are not allowed to run after a false start.
