The American Sport Education Program has a variety of resources to prepare officials for the rigors of the job both on and off the field.
The ASEP online course Officiating Principles provides new and inexperienced high school officials with the foundational training needed to step on the field with confidence. Communication, decision making, conflict resolution, and career management are only some of the topics addressed in this practical course. The text Successful Sports Officiating is included in the course price, providing officials with a valuable reference for years to come.
Successful Sports Officiating is also available for purchase separately. Endorsed by NASO and Referee magazine, the book is a must-read for first-time officials or those looking to elevate their game.
At the youth sport level, ASEP offers the Officiating Youth Sport Instructor Kit, a complete guide allowing youth sport administrators to conduct training sessions for new officials. The kit is available free of charge through the Free Resources area of the ASEP website.
The kit works in tandem with the Officiating Youth Sport video found on the ASEP Youth Sport Training Kit DVD. By purchasing the DVD and downloading the free kit, you'll have everything you need to conduct your own officiating clinics.
For college intramural flag football officials, ASEP offers the NIRSA Officiating Flag Football online course, used by dozens of colleges and universities in training officials. In many cases, the course serves two purposes: to train officials and provide college credit. Contact Jennifer Mulcahey at 800-747-5698, ext. 2304 or JenniferM@hkusa.com for more information on adopting the NIRSA course. Visit the NIRSA Education Center for additional officiating resources for all the major sports.
